After several months of delay, an agreement is finally in place between the USA and its main trading partners across the Pacific. The conclusion of negotiations which have been ongoing since 2008, is seen as a major success for the Obama presidency though the matter of congressional approval remains outstanding.
Positive reaction
As for winners and losers, the positive reaction by a multitude of US lobby groups in endorsing the US negotiating efforts suggests their interests are taken care of. Meanwhile, the more muted response in New Zealand regarding agricultural goods access to the US, particularly milk, tends to add to this notion.
While this deal has no direct impact on Europe, it removes the final hurdle for the Obama administration to make a last ditch effort to secure a Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) deal.
