Carrigallen Mart saw a good entry of heifers and steers at its special sale on Monday night. Lighter heifers met a better trade with a few exceptional lots around the 470kg mark making over €1,000. Heifers in the 500-600kg bracket met an easier trade with many struggling to get past €1.90/kg.

Factory agents were quiter around the ring with many compalining of delays in getting cattle killed. Lighter dairy-type heifers were aso harder to sell with Hereford and Angus heifers around the 360-380kg mark making from €1.60-€1.80/kg.

In the bullock ring, it was a similar story with heavier bullocks meeting an easier trade. Good quality store bullocks around the 550kg mark were making around €2.00/kg with lesser quality types making €1.80kg. A number of light Freisian-cross store bullocks weighing around 400kg met a very poor trade with many struggling to make over €1.40/kg.

In the dry cow ring, good quality cows were a good trade with plenty of buyers for quality fleshed continental cows. Heavy cows close to killing made in the region of €1.50-€1.60/kg with a few exceptional lots hitting over €1.70/kg. The general run of continental store cows was around the €1.50/kg mark. A number of bare Freisian cows straight out of the parlour made €1.00-€1.10/kg.
