Hundreds of tractors, many flying Catalan flags, drove through the city of Lleida on the week before the controversial Scottish-style vote is due to take place in the autonomous region.

The Spanish authorities have declared the independence poll illegal and tension has mounted between the national and regional governments.

The farmers filled the city's streets in an impressive display, which they described as a show of support for democracy.
