Monday

New Year's Day is forecast to be a cold, bright and rather windy day with sunny spells and scattered showers, according to Met Éireann.

Some of the showers of hail may merge into longer spells of rain in parts of the north, with the slight risk of a thundery burst.

A status yellow wind warning is in place for Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, Sligo, Clare and Kerry on Monday.

Northwesterly winds with mean speeds between 50km/h and 65km/h and gusts between 90km/h and 110km/h are expected along coastal areas.

Afternoon temperatures will range from 6°C to 9°C.

It will be cold early on Monday night, with frost setting in as temperatures fall to between 1°C and 4°C, but freshening winds will bring rain eastwards later in the night, clearing any frost.

Tuesday

It will be blustery and wet on Tuesday, with fresh to strong and gusty southwest winds and afternoon temperatures of 7°C to 10°C.

The rain is forecast to clear eastwards to showers early Tuesday night and it will be windy.

Wednesday

Wednesday will be cold and windy, with strong to gale force westerly winds.

There will be sunny spells with frequent bursts of heavy rain and hail showers, turning to sleet and snow on hills and mountains.

Afternoon temperatures are expected to reach between 5°C and 8°C. Rain will become widespread on Wednesday night.

Thursday and Friday

Current indications from Met Éireann suggest there will be heavy rain early on Thursday.

This will clear to brighter weather with showers by afternoon. The latest charts suggest the possibility of stormy conditions for western coastal counties later on Thursday, or overnight into Friday.

It will turn much colder on Friday, with wintry showers, but winds are forecast to ease later in the day.

Farming forecast

Rain

In its farming forecast for the week ahead, Met Éireann has said that while the weather will be very unsettled, rainfall totals are expected near average for the east, the midlands and the south.

It will be wetter than normal for the west coasts and for the north, with more than twice the normal amount of rainfall expected for Donegal – equating to about 70mm of rain.

Temperatures

Mean soil temperature are currently just above normal for the time of year, ranging between 4.5°C in the east and in the midlands to around 6°C or 7°C further to the west.

Temperatures this week are expected to be about normal for the time of year.

Both drying and spraying conditions will remain poor this week, while field conditions look set to remain waterlogged for some time.
