Loveless
9 February: A Russian couple going through a nasty divorce dominated by bitterness, frustration and recriminations continue to live their lives as best as they can. Both of them have found new lovers but their son, 12-year-old Alyosha, is the one who remains hoisted in the middle of this furious dispute. After witnessing one of his parents’ brutal fights, Alyosha vanishes – and the couple are left with no choice but to put their differences aside as they search for their missing son. Directed by Andrey Zvyagintsev, Loveless has been nominated as best foreign language film for the Oscars 2018.
West Side Story
8 February: To celebrate Leonard Bernstein’s 100th anniversary, Belfast Music and Drama Society bring you West Side Story. Based on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, this adaptation transports the classic tale to the 1950s streets of New York in the middle of a fierce turf war between two rival gangs, as two young lovers find themselves caught in the middle. This is a heart-wrenching story of love and loss, which continues to have relevance in this day and age. West Side Story will run until 10 February at the Grand Opera House, Belfast. Tickets are priced between £16 and £30. See www.goh.co.uk for more details.
Jason Byrne
10 February: The Man With Three Brains is a brand-new show from the highly acclaimed and hilariously funny Jason Byrne. There will not be a dry eye in the house from all the laughter, as this show peels back the madness inside Jason Byrne’s head to reveal all three brains working individually. The Times describes Jason as “the outright king of live comedy”, so if you desire a night of entertainment and laughter, look no further as Jason will be taking to the stage at INEC Killarney this weekend. Tickets are priced at €25. Visit www.inec.ie for more information.
