On Wednesday Minister for Agriculture Dara Calleary launched the Grass10 Grassland Farmer of the Year competition.
The competition is run in conjunction with the Grass10 campaign, which aims to promote improved grassland management skills to dairy, beef and sheep farmers.
The focus of Grass10 is on encouraging grassland farmers to grow and utilise more grass in the animal’s diet. The aim is to help farmers utilise 10t DM/ha with 10 grazings per paddock per year.
There is €30,000 in prize funds, with winners from each sector category, as well as a disadvantaged-land winner, a sustainable farming category winner and a young farmer winner. The overall winner will pocket €6,000 tax free.
The Grassland Farmer of the Year competition is supported by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Teagasc, Allied Irish Bank, FBD Insurance, Grassland Agro and Irish Farmers Journal.
Closing date for receipt of entry forms to Teagasc is 31 August 2020.
