Four farmers have been granted Nuffield Ireland travel bursaries worth €14,000 each to study abroad in 2020.

Kate Dempsey from Co Wicklow is the owner of two start-up companies in the marine sector. She will study the impact of government policies on the development of global aquaculture.

Gareth Lamberton is a dairy, beef and sheep farmer from Donegal who supplies Aurivo. His study will look at the impact on-farm decisions have on society.

Linda O’Neill is a dairy farmer from Co Waterford, and plans to study a sustainable animal health programme in Ireland’s national dairy herd.

Bruce Thompson from Co Laois is also a dairy farmer and intends to look at how dung beetles can help in addressing anthelmintic resistance while also embracing biodiversity.

Announcing the new scholars, Nuffield Ireland chair Geoff Dooley said: “The objective of the scholarship is to identify future leaders in the industry and facilitate them to bring about meaningful change. Every year, the competition for places is strong and this year was no exception.”

The new scholars will give an outline of their study topics at the Nuffield Ireland annual conference in the Castleknock Hotel on Friday 15 November 2019.
