400 heifers going under the hammer in Roscrea fatstock sale
The show component of the mart’s annual fatstock show and sale is cancelled, but the sale of top-quality heifers on Friday 8 January is still going ahead as planned.
While there will be no buyers or sellers around the ring for this January's fatstock sales in Roscrea Mart, the sale is still expected to be brisk, with demand strengthened by tight supplies of beef cattle.

Roscrea Mart’s annual January fatstock sale of heifers and cows takes place on Friday 8 January and Saturday 9 January.
In previous years, heifers and cows were offered on the same day during a show.
However, due to COVID-19 concerns, the sale has been split, with heifers going under the hammer on Friday and cows on Saturday.

Strong interest
Central Auctions manager Michael Harty reports that there are strong levels of interest in the sale from factory agents, butcher or wholesale buyers and farmers specialising in the production of top-quality cattle.
The sale will take place online through the MartBids trading platform and Michael says this has also opened up the opportunity for buyers located further afield to trade online.
Supplies of factory-fit cattle have tightened and it is expected that this will add to competition.
The heifer sale will start at 10.30am.
No buyers or sellers are permitted at the ringside, with the mart operating a drop-and-go system for delivery of livestock.
Buyers can view animals on offer from 9am to 10.30am.
