Gurten College in Co Tipperary is among the finalists in the 2018 Sustainable Energy Awards to be decided by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) this Thursday.

The college is under consideration for the work it carried out after an audit by Tipperary Energy Agency.

Changes in recent years include the installation of a wind turbine, solar photovoltaic panels and biomass boilers, as well as the planting of a short-rotation willow energy crop.

Heat recovery from bulk tank cooling allows 30 litres of 50°C hot water for every 100 litres of milk cooled

On the energy-saving side, the college improved insulation, installed smart LED lighting and recently opened a new dairy, complete with variable speed vacuum pumping and heat recovery from milk cooling.

"Heat recovery from bulk tank cooling allows 30 litres of 50°C hot water for every 100 litres of milk cooled," the college said in a statement.

Gurteen College has been the venue for the popular Energy in Agriculture open day for the past three years.

Other agri-food finalists for the awards include:

  • Wyeth Nutrition's infant formula plant in Askeaton, Co Limerick, is competing for its advanced energy consumption and balance management system.
  • Kerry Foods' frozen meals plant in Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan, recovers heat from the freezing process to make hot water.
  • Musgrave goup's Supervalu and Centra stores are shortlisted for their community effort, including the donation of their first year's energy savings to energy upgrades in local charities and clubs.
  • The Galway Wind Park in Cloosh Valley, Co Galway, is a joint venture between SSE and Coillte and is the largest wind farm in Ireland.
