A Norwegian court has sentenced the former chief executive of Yara fertilisers, Thorlief Enger, to three years in jail, after he was found guilty on charges of gross corruption.

Enger, along with three other senior executives from Yara, were all found guilty by the court of paying more than €7m in bribes to officials in India and Libya to establish fertiliser operations in both countries.

The three other executives were each given a minimum of two years in jail.

The conviction of the four men brings to an end the largest corporate corruption case in Norway’s history.

The case started in 2011, after new management uncovered cases of corruption that took place in Yara prior to 2008. Norwegian authorities were subsequently notified and the company was fined more than €32.7m.
