Asba Meats was back in Ennis District Court on Friday 24 October for the case of monies owed to Town & Country Meats.

That firm had obtained a court order in the circuit court on 4 June 2024 for the recovery of over €16,000 plus costs and expenses.

When the case was before Judge Alec Gabbett earlier this week, he adjourned it until Friday, saying he wanted cash from Asba on that day.

Solicitor Stiofán Fitzpatrick, acting for Town & Country Meats, told the court that he had received a cheque for €2,000 on Friday morning from O’Doherty Solicitors, which is acting for Asba Meats.

When Judge Gabbett expressed surprise that a cheque had been accepted, Fitzpatrick said that it was drawn on O’Doherty’s client account.

“That won’t bounce,” the judge commented. “Yes, it won’t be a basketball,” agreed Fitzpatrick.

'Long process'

Judge Gabbett said that it would be a long process to get the full balance repaid, to which Ftizpatrick replied that “if we got €2,000 every week it mightn’t be”.

Fitzpatrick also noted that Asba Meats director Tarequr Rahman Khan was not in court, despite giving a sworn undertaking from the witness box in Ennis earlier this month to turn up at any future court hearings concerning his company.

Judge Gabbett told the solicitor acting for Khan to let their client know that he is “in breach of an undertaking” to the court.

The case was put in for mention again on 7 November.
