Aldi’s surge in the domestic grocery market shows no sign of slowing, according to the most recent data released by Kantar Worldpanel.

According to Kantar’s figures, sales for the German discounter jumped by 22.1% in the 12-week period to 2 February. Aldi’s compatriot Lidl also saw gains, according the latest set of results. Lidl’s sales increased by 12% in the 12-week period. SuperValu saw modest growth of 0.7%.

“Amid a challenging market backdrop, SuperValu continues to maintain solid growth ahead of the market.”

Tesco’s position as the market leader is under continued threat. The global giant’s market share has dipped from 27.7% to 26%, despite 87% of Irish shoppers frequenting its stores – more than any other retailer. Dunnes and Superquinn have both lost ground, with shares standing at 23.8% and 5.1% respectively. Aldi is now at 7.2%, while Lidl has a 6.6% market share. SuperValu is now at 20.1%.

Retailers will be eagerly anticipating the next set of result from Kantar. The merging of Superquinn into SuperValu was made official last week and the combination of the two could bring SuperValu’s market share to over 25%. With Tesco’s continued slide, the Musgraves-owned SuperValu is likely to be closer than ever to being the number one supermarket in the country.
