The State examinations kicked off on Wednesday. Almost 8,000 students are expected to sit the Leaving Certificate agricultural science paper: 4,749 males and 3,224 females.

This means that more students will sit the agricultural science exam than subjects such as engineering, music, physics, Spanish and religious education.

Just 51 students are expected to sit the agricultural economics examination.
