Friday’s sale at Rathfriland Mart saw a full yard of stock on offer with a notable increase in quality.
Export buyers pushed prices with 149 weanlings clearing up to £2.94/kg for a top-quality 248kg Charolais, which sold for £700. A 304kg Limousin weanling sold at £825 (£2.71/kg) and a 218kg Charolais made £605 or £2.77/kg.
There was a large selection of dropped calves on offer on the day. Prices of Friesians ranged mainly from £125 to £150 with top quality types selling to over £180. Continental calves sold from £210 to £460, depending on age and quality.
There was a small entry of fat cows, which sold from £500 for a 482kg animal to £915 for a 570kg cow. Bullocks sold from £565 for 264kg to £1,275 for a 678kg animal. Prices averaged mainly from £1,000 to £1,150 depending on quality and age.
Heifers were a brisk trade on the day also and sold from £540 for 246kg to £1,210 for 558kg. Prices ranged mainly on the day from £825 for 448kg to £1,140 for 518kg. Again, quality drove prices in the heifer ring.
At Tuesday’s sheep sale, prices were extremely strong once again. Heavy hoggets saw prices rise by up to £20 per head. Fat ewes were also up by £25 per head. Spring lambs sold to £4.96/kg for 11 at 25kg half weight. Hoggets sold from £105 for 22.5kg to £123 for 30.5kg. Fat rams sold from £117 to £150.
