Wednesday’s sale at Cahir Mart saw a solid trade for all store cattle. Mart manager Jonathan O’Sullivan said that parlour cows had slipped a bit in the past two weeks, but fleshed cows remain firm. Feeding Friesian cows sold from €1.10/kg to €1.30/kg, while Friesians carrying flesh made from €1.45/kg to €1.55/kg.

This Limousin-cross cow, born April 2013 and weighing 720kg, sold for €1,080 (€1.50/kg).
Jonathan said that the store trade continues to be very strong. The majority of cattle on offer in the area are Angus and Hereford types and those over 500kg to 550kg are selling for around €2.00/kg, with continentals making about 20c/kg more.

This Friesian cull cow, born March 2017 and weighing 455kg, sold for €530 (€1.16/kg).
Friesians in the same weight range were selling mainly from €900 to €950/head and, again, quality was a driver of prices. Jonathan added that the rain in recent days has added to the sale “putting a bid more life back into it”.

This Friesian cow, born 2008 and weighing 670kg, sold for €870 (€1.30/kg).
Lighter stores were a good strong trade as well, with plenty of farmer demand, despite the lower numbers on offer. Angus and Hereford types from 400kg to 450kg sold mainly from €850 to €1,070, depending on quality.

This Jersey-cross cow, born February 2014 and weighing 710kg, sold for €945 (€1.33/kg).
Lighter Friesians from 300kg to 400kg were a tougher trade, with some around the 400kg mark making €650/head.

This Friesian-cross cow, born February 2012 and weighing 660kg, sold for €860 (€1.30/kg).
The lamb trade was steady on last week, but prices overall are running about €18 to €20/head below the same time last year. Cull ewes are a steady trade. Commission rates are 1.5% to the seller and 2.5% to the buyer.

This Jersey-cross cow, born February 2015 and weighing 540kg, sold for €710 (€1.31/kg).
