A special sale of 150 heifers suitable for breeding and farmed under organic farming status takes place in Gort Mart in Co Galway on Thursday 1 October at 5.30pm.

The sale is being organised by the Organic Beef and Lamb Innovation Group (OBLIG) and Teagasc organic advisers and is aimed at offering organic farmers an excellent opportunity to source high-quality suckler replacements.

It is also a good opportunity for non-organic farmers to source high-quality replacements, with the sale also open to conventional farmers to purchase any of the stock on offer.

John Noonan, Teagasc organic adviser, said that the majority of heifers are top-quality continental types, possessing good EuroStar replacement index figures.

He added that there was free transport nationally to any organic farmer that purchased five or more maiden heifers, while there was €1,000 in prize money for sale champions and buyers of such animals.

Catalogue

The catalogue for the heifers entered in the sale can be found on Facebook here or the OBLIG website here and will be available at the mart.

There will also be 10 organic breeding bulls and 120 bullocks on offer as part of the sale.

Bidding is ringside and via the LSL online sales platform.

Information talk

An information talk for interested farmers will also take place in advance of the sale starting at 4.30pm.

Discussions will centre on health with contributions from vets and organic producers.

There will also be information on the OBLIG European Innovation Partnership project.
