Turret Farm, located in Blarney Castle Estate and Gardens, is holding a production sale of top-quality maiden and in-calf heifers on Saturday 22 August in Macroom Mart at 1pm.
The sale is the herd’s first voyage into the maiden and in-calf heifer market.
Farm manager James Grant explains that the farm is running a large suckler herd and in the past all progeny, including heifers, were brought through to beef.
He says that this resulted in a significant number of heifers possessing good maternal traits, which would make good suckler cows being slaughtered.
As a result, the farm has selected 23 maiden heifers and seven heifers surplus to requirements for its first significant production sale.
Heifers on offer are mainly well-bred Limousin heifers with a number of heifers on offer also possessing Simmental genetics.
Replacement index
Heifers are all genotyped and the replacement index varies in the main from €110 to €120, with four heifers above this to a top value of €162.
There are also four heifers below the €100 replacement index mark, ranging from €80 to €97.
All heifers have high predicted transmitting ability (PTA) figures for carcase weight, ranging on average from 20kg to 30kg carcase.
In-calf heifers
Seven in-calf heifers have replacement index values ranging from €85 to €171, with PTA figures for carcase ranging from 20kg to 32kg. Further information can be obtained by calling 021-438 5252.
