Black & White dairy sale achieves top of 12,500gns in Carlisle

It was a busy weekend at the Harrison & Hetherington auction centre in Carlisle where a number of top-end sheep and cattle sales were taking place.

The Black & White sale took centre stage on Saturday, attracting some of the UK’s hottest dairy prospects. This sale was led with a 12,500gns bid for the March 2018-born Whinchar Atwood Savoir Fare.

This stylish young heifer was brought out by Leicestershire breeder Andrew Birkle and is backed by 10 generations of EX-classified cows.

Close behind at 9,000gns was a Jodie Red heifer from Brian Yates of the Logan herd. This lady is sired by Diamondback and from the Jodie line at East Logan.

10,000gns tops Twilight Texels

The first of the sheep sales last weekend was held on the Friday, which saw the Twilight Texel sale hit 10,000gns. Topping the sale was an ET ewe lamb daughter of Eden Valley Wiz Kid out of a dam by Garngour Upperclass.

This ET sister to the 18,0000gns ewe from this year’s Scottish National Sale in Lanark was brought out by Robert Bennett of the Plasucha flock. Buying this one were Donald and Sarah MacPherson, Berwick-Upon-Tweed.

Next best at a call of 5,000gns was a ewe lamb from Welsh consigners Selwyn and Tomas Evans. This was ESW1801055, a daughter of Cairness Ranger out of a dam by Garngour Vintage. She sold to Graham Morrison for the Deveronvale flock, Banff, Aberdeenshire.

Christmas Stars tops at 14,000gns

Also taking place at Carlisle on Saturday was the Christmas Stars Texel sale, which was led by a call of 14,000gns. Top price was achieved for a gimmer from Messrs Boden and Davies’ Sportsmans flock.

The sale-topper was the second in from the Sportsmans flock and is an ET-bred daughter of the 70,000gns Teiglum Younggun and out of a daughter of the 42,000gns Tullylagan Tonka. Second-best were a brace of sales at 9,000gns, with the first of these being another from the same home. Also ET-bred, she is by Knock Will.I.Am and out of another Tonka daughter. The other at 9,000gns was the best of the sale from Graham Morrison’s Deveronvale flock. She was a Strathbogie Yes Sir daughter out of a dam by Strathbogie Terminator.

West of Ireland female sale this Friday

The Irish Texel Sheep Society’s west region show and sale of in-lamb shearling ewes and maiden ewe lambs takes place this coming Friday evening 7 December in Roscommon.

The sale offers over 40 females, made up of some of the top flocks in the region. One such flock is Hillswood, which has won a number of top accolades over the past few years, including claiming the national champion show flock for 2018, having stood reserve in 2017.

This sale will offer an opportunity to acquire a top ewe for those looking to start a flock or build on their existing flock.

Irish breeding tops Royal Welsh winter fair

Continuing on their successful run from the Carlisle AgriExpo, Peredur and Llyr Hughes were back out in force with their young Queen Bee.

This six-month-old Limousin heifer was awarded baby beef champion at Carlisle and again this week at the Royal Welsh winter fair. Sire behind this stylish heifer is Derrygullinane Kingbull, a bull bred by Gerry Walsh, Ballina, Co Mayo, and purchased by the Hughes at the Limousin premier in October 2016 for €11,300.

Much of that investment was paid back when the 311kg Queen Bee went under the hammer at the Welsh winter fair and sold for the top price of £7,500.
