John Sleigh spoke to farmers at the Farmers Journal Scotland Farm Profit Programme about the prospects of cheap South American beef coming into the UK in a no-deal Brexit.

As revealed by the Irish Farmers Journal on Wednesday, there are proposals to create a tariff-free quota for beef that would be open to countries like Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay.

“[It's] bound to take the price down, getting imports from abroad. There are a lot of cattle feed lots in places like Brazil and not so much grass fed.

“You won’t get the quality compared to our Scottish grass-fed cattle. To be honest, I am getting fed up of talking about Brexit so much.”

Adam Watson Darnford, Aberdeenshire

“There needs to be the same traceability and standards if beef comes here. It needs to be a level playing field.

“But I think they will get a deal at the last minute. You never know but I think there will be a deal at the end of the day, there has to be.”
