With school holidays only around the corner, the College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise is running tractor driving courses for 13- to 15-year-olds.
The courses will be held during July and August at CAFRE’s Greenmount Campus (Antrim), Loughry Campus (Cookstown) and Enniskillen Campus and aim to improve farm safety.
As silage season gets into full swing, yards around the country will be alive with activity and many members of the family will be helping out with day-to-day tasks on the farm.
Machinery is one of the biggest hazards on any farm and young people are particularly vulnerable. By law, from 13 years of age a certificate of competence in tractor driving must be obtained in order to operate agricultural vehicles.

The courses are taught by experienced instructors who guide young people through the training and assessment process. They also provide a range of tractors and equipment, giving students a broad experience.
Those interested in undertaking the training will be able to book and pay online on the CAFRE website from 10am on Wednesday 10 May.
