Calf exports to EU markets continue to run strongly ahead of last year. Exports last week were 7,702 head and the previous week stood at 8,422 head.

This contrasts with previous years, when exports would slow down in May.

The difference this year is that demand in the Netherlands has remained very strong week after week. Meanwhile, seasonal exports to Spain are picking up.

Total calf exports now stand at 159,624 up to 19 May, an increase of approximately 33% on last year’s good performance.

Calf exports to the Netherlands have now reached 76,717, about 82% ahead of last year.

Calf exports to Spain have reached 48,686, an increase of about 15%.

Exports of all cattle from Ireland to the EU are running at 170,000 head, which is 36% ahead of last year.

Exports to non-EU countries stand at just under 8,000 head.
