The Millfarm Herd of Tim Reddan, Nenagh, Co Tipperary, held a production sale last week in Portumna Mart which included 30 freshly calved heifers and a selection of maiden heifers.
The herd average in 2020 boasted some strong performance results, with an average lactation of 5,970 litres, average butterfat at 4.05% and an average protein of 3.53%. The sale included heifers from dams with recorded yields behind them of over 7,500kg for milk and others having fat over 5% and proteins over 4%.
The online sale, which was conducted by Cork-based auctioneer Denis Barrett on MartBids, achieved a 100% clearance of the calved heifers, which included a top price of €2,420 being paid for a freshly calved February 2019-born heifer with an EBI of €156. The 30 calved heifers averaged €2,008/head.
Maiden heifers also sold well, with a 100% clearance and a top price of €1,060 being paid for a February 2020-born weanling heifer weighing 315kg. The average price for the maiden heifers that were sold was €785/head.
Mart manager Marie Young said: “We had huge interest in the sale, with calved heifers mostly selling to local dairy farmers. There appears to be more appetite from dairy farmers for calved heifers this year”
