There was another successful dairy clearance sale at Corrin Mart on Friday last with a total of 103 head of cattle going through the ring.
Speaking after the sale, mart manager Sean Leahy said: “This was a complete clearance sale of a very genuine herd of cows with generations of AI breeding and milk recording behind them, so they ticked all the boxes.
“It was a very successful sale, with 28 cows selling for over €2,000 and the majority of those young first to fourth lactation cows sold for between €1,800 up to €2,580.
“Across the cows and in-calf heifers, the average was over €1,700 and that included a few older cows that were empty. Demand was good for them too and they made from €800 and up.”
Good spread
He reported a good spread of buyers, with about half staying within Cork and one Cavan buyer purchased 15.
Top price on the day of €2,580 went to a first lactation cow with an EBI of €205, in-calf to sexed semen, she is due her second calf in January 2023.
In-calf heifers followed a similar price trend to the cows and there were 19 maiden heifers included in the sale and they made from €1,000 back to €600.
Leahy reported good demand for the dairy stock from these clearances.
“There’s real appetite from buyers for stock with really good genetics or for a cow that’s going to calf down in January or February.
“They’re the ones getting the premium price, as the buyer is closer to getting a return from them.
“Previous years, stock at clearance sales were making €200 to €300 above the commercial market, now that’s probably close to €500.
“There’s a fierce appetite for very good stock nationwide and the buyers are looking to get good genetics and upgrade the herd or there’s herds that may have lost cows with TB looking to build up numbers.
“You also have a few new entrants who are looking to build up numbers a small bit, but the level of activity from these buyers isn’t what it was a few years ago.”
This was the last of the clearance sales for the north Cork venue in 2022 but there are a few booked in for January. While some farmers have booked in for early in the year, Sean said there was a few who were considering selling but they are waiting to see the lie of the land regarding the proposed cow reduction schemes.
The next dairy sale in Corrin is on 2 December and includes 150 in-calf heifers.
