Last Tueday’s sale at Athenry Mart saw a smaller entry of stock on offer, but a very strong trade for all good-quality stock. Mart manager Alan Barry said that he was quite impressed with the trade, as it was stronger than expected. While the absence of feedlot buyer activity was noticed, farmer buyers were the main drivers behind the trade and kept a firm floor under prices.

Where heavy bullocks were on offer, the trade was strong and steady. The main run of continental bullocks over 500kg sold from €2.00/kg to €2.20/kg.

Good-quality lighter stores from 400kg to 500kg were a very brisk trade at times. Alan said that the majority of these made from €2.50/kg to €2.70/kg or from €1,000 to €1,150/head. He said that while well-fleshed cull cows were a strong and steady trade on previous weeks, prices of lesser-quality cows and backward store cows were back on previous weeks, which is understandable given the time of year.

This Charolais cross heifer, born April 2016 and weighing 555kg sold for €1,155 (€2.08/kg).

Heifers were a strong trade also, particularly lighter store heifers from 400kg to 500kg, which were met with very strong farmer demand and prices ranged mainly from €2.30/kg to €2.60/kg, similar to the equivalent bullock.

Commission rates are 1.75% to the seller and €9.25 to the buyer.

Monday’s sheep sale was quite large, with a good trade for all butchers’ lambs.
