Monday’s sale at Thurles Mart saw an entry of about 350 cattle and calves on offer. Heavy bullocks over 600kg sold mainly from €1.80/kg to €1.90/kg for Herefords, with Angus bullocks selling in the same weight range.

This Limousin heifer, born March 2018, weighing 450kg sold for €920 (€2.04/kg).

There were some plain-quality Friesians in the same weight range that sold from €1.50/kg to €1.70/kg.

This Charolais bullock, born March 2018, weighing 535kg sold for €1,140 (€2.13/kg).

Those from 500kg to 600kg were mainly dairy-crosses. At the top of the market, continentals sold to €2.13/kg. Better-quality Hereford and Angus bullocks sold from €1.80/kg to €1.90/kg. There were some Friesians on offer also, which sold from €1.55/kg to €1.60/kg.

Lighter stores from 400kg to 500kg were available in large numbers and were a strong trade.

This Hereford bullock, born February 2018, weighing 470kg sold for €990 (€2.11/kg).

Again, Charolais-cross bullocks were the strongest trade, selling for over €2.30/kg. Friesians sold from €1.50/kg to €1.76/kg, with quality a major factor affecting prices. Better-quality Angus and Herefords sold from €1.70/kg to €1.90/kg.

This Hereford bullock, born July 2017, weighing 656kg sold for €1,185 (€1.81/kg).

There were fewer heifers available than bullocks, with heavy types over 500kg making up to €2.00/kg. Those from 400kg to 500kg sold mainly from €800 to €900/head, with top-quality continentals making over €1,000 or €2.20/kg. Lighter Angus and Hereford types still made about €1.80/kg to €1.95/kg.

This Charolais heifer, born January 2018, weighing 530kg sold for €1,030 (€1.94/kg).

Lighter heifers under 400kg sold from €2.30/kg to €2.75/kg for top-quality types, while plainer types made from €1.60/kg. Commission rates are €9 for multiples and €10 for singles and €10 to the buyer.

These three Angus bullocks, born February 2017, weighing 666kg on average sold for €1,230 (€1.85/kg).
