AI-bred in-calf dairy heifers with good EBIs, well-reared and with good background information easily made over €1,400 on Friday in Newport, Co Tipperary.

The annual Christmas sale in Newport on the Tipperary and Limerick border draws crowds from across the country, as there are no other sales happening Christmas week.

The sale gathers sellers and buyers from the hinterland of Limerick, north Tipperary and Clare, as well as buyers from Cork, Donegal, Kilkenny and Athlone.

There were two nice homebred batches of heifers from Cappawhite and Newport that were well turned out, well managed, advertised well in advance and on average they made between €1,400 and €1,550 each, with two bidders getting caught on one heifer, taking her to €1,950 before the hammer fell.

The first lot of heifers from Cappawhite were taller, more Holstein heifers, but were well bred, managed and well turned out and all bar two or three made over €1,400 each.

The second lot were Holstein bred as well, but looked that bit stronger set, more British Friesian-type and were higher on fertility EBI and all made over €1,500 each, with one of them reaching €1,950.

In the second half of the sale, slightly smaller heifers that were not done as well as the main lots averaged €1,100 to €1,200 each.

Poorer-quality stock with no information available and showing no signs of calving (calving April onwards) made poor money with some heifers leaving the ring unsold for €700 to €800 each.

Almost 100 dairy lots went through the ring on the day.

Suckler sale

The suckler sale started as the main dairy lots were drawing to a close.

Again, there was a good mix of stock on offer, with good money for stronger in-calf heifers.

The general run of in-calf heifers made €1,300 to €1,400 for February calvers.

Similar to the dairy sale, anything not showing any signs of calving made slightly less money.
