The sunny spell witnessed in Ireland and the UK continued throughout the three days of the 160th Great Yorkshire Show. The show, which attracted in excess of 134,000 visitors, played host to a number of national championships.

Included in this was the Charolais nationals. It was a great day for the breed when the 2017 national champion Sportsman’s Maisie went on to secure the prestigious interbreed championship at the show.

This two-year-old heifer was brought out by breeder Charlie Boden and held off stiff competition, beating 14 other breeds to claim the supreme championship.

Packed with breeding, the sire behind the stylish heifer is Barnsford Ferny, a bull purchased at Stirling for 70,000gns in 2011, which later went on to secure the interbreed championship at the Royal Welsh Show.

Maisie herself is no stranger to winning, having also secured the junior female championship at last year’s Royal Welsh Show.

The Grahams herd of Robert and Jean Graham, Stirling, secured the reserve interbreed title with their Limousin champion Grahams Melody.

This heifer also comes from a well-recognised bloodline, with the sire being the 32,000gns Ampertaine Elgin, while the dam is three-time Balmoral interbreed champion Millbrook Ginger Spice.

This heifer is a result of an embryo sold by Oldcastle breeder Willie Smith, with another resulting calf from the flush Grahams Michael selling for 20,000gns at Carlisle last October.

This win marks a great month for the Grahams outfit, having also secured the interbreed champion at the Royal Highland Show with Grahams Naomi.
