CAP and convergence

The differences in approach to CAP among the main parties have been well documented during the campaign. Finding a compromise position will be tricky.

Carbon tax

If the Green Party gets into government, it will likely want to broaden the carbon tax base. It may also push for a sectoral target for agriculture. The party is also opposed to the nitrates derogation, and its renewal may prove problematic.

Live exports

The Green Party also wants to abolish live exports to non-EU states. While Matt Carthy and Charlie McConalogue both pledged their parties’ support for the export of sheep and cattle to continue, it may become a pressure point in talks.

Taxation

Sinn Féin has an ambitious investment programme to fund. Income tax, capital offsets, access to third-level grants for asset-rich but low-income farm families, CAT and CGT reliefs, the vacant site levy and property/land taxes have all been issues with previous governments. This may prove the real battleground in negotiations.
