Three Westmeath farmers have been given six weeks to remove their stock from a cow park.

Anne Harte, Patrick Glennon and Frank Smith shared the rights to 38ac of grassland in Edmondstown/Killynan, near Mullingar, for over 40 years.

Cow parks were once relatively common in some counties, with 20 in Westmeath alone.

Often parts of estates taken over by the Land Commission, cow parks were retained in public ownership for use by local farmers without land.

Westmeath County Council, which owns the land, brought the case to court. The judge found that a trust that provided access to the land ceased in 2003.
