The entire country has been placed under a status yellow weather warning by Met Éireann as it has forecasted downpours of up to 50mm in places.

The warning came into place for all of Munster and Connacht along with Cavan, Monaghan and Donegal at 8am on Monday and it will remain in place until 3pm on Tuesday, 20 October.

These counties are expected to see the heaviest showers with totals expected to range between 30mm and 50mm. These totals may be higher in mountainous areas and there is a risk of flooding.

The warning comes into place for Leinster at the later time of 11am but it will also last until 3pm on Tuesday. In these 12 counties the rainfall totals are expected to be lower, ranging between 20mm and 30mm. There is still a risk of local flooding.

Northern Ireland

The UK Met Office has also issued a similar status yellow rain warning for counties Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Tyrone and Derry. Antrim is the only county excluded.

This weather warning came into place at 5am on Monday and it will expire at 3am on Tuesday. The Met Office warns that the heavy rain may cause some travel disruption and flooding.
