Eleven calves, three cows and 29 deer were hit by trains on Irish railways in 2019. A total of 48 animals were hit by trains.

Data from Irish Rail shows that the 11 calves were hit in June after 7am at Sixmilebridge on the Ennis line.

The cows were all hit by separate trains - one on the line between Enfield and Kilcock, Co Kildare; one in Bishopswood, Co Offaly; and one cow was hit on the Cork line.

Deer

Twenty-nine deer were hit by trains in the last year on different railway lines. The remaining animals were either dogs or what Irish Rail described as “large animals”.

A total of 243 animals have been killed by trains since 2016. In this period, after deer, sheep were the most common animals which were hit by trains, with 28 killed in this period.
