Retailers of fencing posts have until Monday 30 April to sell the remainder of their creosote-treated products, as the sale of products treated with creosote, other than utility poles and railway sleepers, is banned after this date.
The Irish Farmers Journal understands that the Department of Agriculture could not legally seek a derogation for the continued use of creosote products, with Ireland having been the only nation to vote against the initial ban.
Many retailers across the country are reportedly sold out of common stock such as 5ft and 6ft intermediate posts, with small quantities of lighter posts and strainers available in some locations.

Retailers have been fearful of being caught with unsaleable products after the deadline date, while the supply of creosote-treated timber has been low, as treatment plants in Europe beginning winding down operations.
