Calving sheds and calf pens should be checked before the calving season begins.

All gates should open and close easily, while not forgetting the importance of having access to an escape route.

Make sure that the calving jack, head gates and lighting are in working order. Calving facilities should be clean, well-bedded, with good lighting and an adequate supply of clean water.

  • If not already done, carry out a silage analysis as soon as possible. Most local co-ops provide this service.

  • Pre-calving minerals are essential in dry cow and heifer diets. Investing in a good-quality mineral will save you money in the long run. There are different methods of delivering these minerals. Have a chat with your adviser about which method would suit your farm.
  • The AHI/Teagasc calf events begin on 5 January and will be happening throughout the country during January. These are really worthwhile events and even if you consider yourself an expert in calf management, you will still benefit from these events. They are an excellent opportunity to learn from highly experienced calf people.
