Dairygold has launched a new farm succession programme aimed at offering support to milk suppliers on forming partnerships, planning farm transfers and entering or stepping back from farming.
The Dairygold 'Pathways' programme is open to new, expanding and retiring milk suppliers, as the co-op determined an urgent need to double down on farm succession with an average supplier age of 59.
The initiative kicked off with the release of a farm succession guide at a meeting in Fermoy attended by 200 Dairygold members, with discussions on wills, tax planning and farm transfer structures.
“Succession planning is a case-by-case process and the right solutions look different for every family,” Dairygold’s chair Pat Clancy said.
Constant
“What remains constant is the benefit to all society members of agreeing a firm pathway for succession on farm and to enable the next generation to take the next step on their journey as they continue to develop and farm the land.”
The co-op has pledged further succession events and the establishment of young farmer groups in its bid to encourage the next generation of suppliers to get farming.
It has said that its appointment of Paul O’Connell to a role dedicated to farm succession offers suppliers a single point of contact for all queries on succession.
“The 'Pathways' booklet is designed to give members a starting point, outlining the supports available with a step-by-step approach to assist them in understanding the options at whatever stage of the journey they are on,” O’Connell said after its launch.
“It also acknowledges that no two situations are the same and that guidance and support are key to helping members through the process of succession planning as they consider their options.
“It is the first step of our programme. We will continue to host further events and initiatives throughout 2026 to support our members and the next generation as they transition to farming the land.”
