The IFA is holding a number of derogation meetings where farmers can have their say on the current Department of Agriculture review.

Last year, almost 7,000 intensively stocked farmers availed of a derogation to farm at a higher stocking level.

Secretary general of the Department Brendan Gleeson told farmers at the Irish Farmers Journal Beef Summit last Thursday that the granting of derogation by Brussels was “never a given”.

It’s important that all farmers have their say

This comment was noted by IFA environment chair Thomas Cooney, who said the upcoming meetings are vital to have their views on derogation heard.

“It’s important that we have a derogation going forward and that it’s a workable derogation,” Cooney said.

“There should be no extra cost on the farmer, so it’s important that all farmers have their say.

"The added asks that are put on farmers must be practical and must provide a return for farmers.”

The Department review is voluntary and applications for submissions close on 24 May.

The meetings are as follows:

  • 16 May - Riverside Park Hotel, Macroom, 8pm.
  • 17 May - Horse and Jockey Hotel, Thurles, 8pm.
  • 21 May - Woodford Dolmen Hotel, Carlow, 8pm.
  • 22 May - Ardboyne Hotel, Navan, 8pm.
  • 23 May - McWilliams Park Hotel, Claremorris, 8pm.
