The first provisional results for Scotland barley harvest have been published by AHDB. Compared with early results from last year’s harvest, the figures show moisture content has risen by 1.3% to 16.3% DM, while average specific weight has fallen from 68kg/hl to 65kg/hl. Nitrogen content has also fallen from 1.66% DM to 1.55% DM.

Small screenings have worsened compared with last year, with 2% of seeds going through a 2.25mm sieve – that figure was 1.7% in 2018.

There are also fewer large grains, with 93.4% of seeds retained by a 2.5mm grid compared with 94.5% 12 months earlier. Across the UK, the first provisional estimates for barley show good quality for early harvested samples.

Even though AHDB believes it is too early to know of the functionality of this year’s crop, nitrogen levels are generally lower than last season and germination, where reported, has been good.

  • Nitrogen levels for those samples surveyed so far have generally been lower than last season.

This is especially true of the spring barley results included so far, with average nitrogen reported at 1.65% compared with 1.73% last season.

  • Specific weight of barley has generally been lower so far this season.
  • Despite smaller grain sizes, screenings have so far been reported as improved on last season, aiding the usability of this season’s crop. Across winter and spring barley, the proportion passing through a 2.25mm sieve is down 1.1% at 2.1%. Meanwhile, the proportion retain by a 2.5mm sieve is up 3.4% at 92.3%.
  • Wheat

Wheat quality is broadly in line with last year, however with results only reflecting earlier-harvested regions, samples challenged by wet weather are unlikely to be represented this early.

  • Wheat protein across all nabim groups is broadly in line with the same stage last season. Across the samples surveyed so far, nabim group one protein has averaged 13.1%, the same as this stage last year.
  • Specific weight of early samples is marginally down, averaging 78.2kg/hl. However, bushel weights are still ahead of the three-year average.
  • The rainfall during some of the later-harvested samples is not necessarily reflected in early results. Samples of nabim group one wheat have averaged 343s, with a range of 239s to 426s. Anecdotally, lower falling numbers have been heard of and this is something we will monitor through the course of the survey.
  • Early signs of lower HFNs as the harvest moves north can be seen in samples for the midlands where HFN averages 304s, compared with 347s at the same point last season.
