The plane has landed State-side and the nominees for Oscars 2023 are no doubt enjoying the build-up to the 95th Academy Award ceremony taking place at 5pm on Sunday evening in Los Angles.

That is 1am Sunday night-Monday morning time here at home.

There is great excitement among film enthusiasts since the nominations were announced and should a win hit the back of the net for the Irish at the ceremony, I imagine the whole country will have found a connection to the Oscar winner, no matter how long-winded and convoluted that connection will be. We ‘re good at that sort of thing.

Government approval

Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media Catherine Martin sent her best wishes to the nominees.

“It is an historic day for the Irish language and I look forward to Oscar night when the world will hear the Irish language spoken in a nominated film,” she said.

That would be An Cailín Ciúin (The Quiet Girl), the film directed by Dublin’s Colm Bairéad.

An adaptation of Irish author Claire Keegan’s book Foster, in its opening week An Cailín Ciúin became the highest grossing Irish language film of all time in Ireland and the UK.

At its premiere at the Berlin Film Festival, An Cailín Ciúin won the Grand Prix of the international jury of the Generation Kplus programme.

This was followed by a plethora of awards in Dublin, including seven Irish Film and Television Academy Awards.

On Sunday night, all fingers will be crossed when the Best International Film category is announced.

With The Banshees of Inisherin nominated for nine Academy Awards, all Irish eyes will be on Thurles girl, Kerry Condon and the Fair City’s finest Brendan Gleeson, Colin Farrell and Barry Keoghan.

Not forgetting adopted Irish man director Martin McDonagh. Sure, if he wins we’ll all be calling him Irish anyway.

A special background role

With the scenery playing a particularly good-looking background role, Achill islanders and Galwegians will surely be ready to welcome the throngs of visitors to their shores this summer, looking for a Banshees experience.

Anyone who has spent summers in Connemara, an tOileáin Árann agus down on Keem Beach already know just how special these parts of our country are.

Now, the film world will be enticed with glimpses of our sandy beaches and dramatic landscape.

With Keem Beach previously recognisable to Irish audiences from Discover Ireland ads, in advance of the ceremony this weekend, a sand art installation of Colin Farrell is now taking up a sizeable chunk of this pristine beach.

Commissioned by Ladbrokes, acclaimed sand artist Sean Corcoran created this striking sand portrait of Dubliner Colin Farrell in his Best Actor-nominated role as Padraic Súilleabháin from Banshees.

With Ireland represented in a record 14 categories, we wish everyone involved the very best of good luck for this exciting weekend.
