The Ulster Grassland Society’s (UGS) annual grassland farmer of the year competition has opened for entries for 2019.

The competition is open to UGS members. However, non-members can also enter and will receive one year’s free membership to the UGS.

Entry forms are available on the UGS website and are open to farmers with dairy, beef and/or sheep enterprises. The competition closes for entries on 5 July 2019.

Judging

UGS judges will visit shortlisted farms during the summer to assess the grassland-based businesses and winners within farming sectors, as well as the overall UGS grassland farmer of the year, will be announced at the society’s AGM in January.

The overall winner then goes forward to represent NI as a finalist in the British Grassland Society’s grassland farmer competition.

Co Down sheep farmer John Martin won the UGS competition in 2018 and Fermanagh beef and sheep farmer and Irish Farmers Journal contributor John Egerton was the winner in 2017.
