With the 13 April deadline fast appraoching, some 5,750 farmers had applied for a nitrates derogation.

Almost 7,000 intensively stocked farmers availed of the derogation last year.

Even accounting for a last minute rush, it would appear that fewer farmers are seeking a derogation this year.

The nitrates derogation allows farmers to exceed the limit of 170kg of livestock manure nitrogen per hectare set down in the nitrates regulations, up to a maximum of 250kg/ha, subject to stricter rules.

Online

Applications can be made online this year and farmers must complete the nutrient management plans which are produced using NMP online, submitted to the Department through AgFood.ie.
