“I’ve decided to focus my attention on the deputy race,” Renaghan said on Tuesday. “I had five counties supporting my presidential push, but I believe I would be better served running as deputy.”

Monaghan poultry farmer Renaghan was seconded by his native county on 21 December to run for president. He will now need the support of five counties as well as Monaghan to secure the nomination for deputy.

He intimated that he has already received some support in his new bid.

The election of a whole new executive board including the deputy president is subject to a rule change under discussion at Tuesday’s IFA executive council.
