Scotland’s store lamb season got off to a strong start, with prices up £5-£10/head at sales in Caithness, Oban, Lairg and Dingwall.

The one-day lamb sale at Lairg saw numbers and prices both up on last year. United Auctions sold over 10,000 wethers lambs for an average £59.29/head – £7.22/head more than last year. A total of 3,837 ewe lambs averaged £73.04, up £13.53.

The top price for ewe lambs was £210/head paid to Dunbeath Estate. The top hill cheviot wether price paid was £81, with park cheviots at £80.50, and texel cross wethers selling to £83.50.

Elsewhere, Oban mart sold 5,056 lambs which averaged £63.86, a rise of £5.01. Wet weather in July meant lambs were not as heavy as expected.

Last week Dingwall mart’s store sale of 9,164 store lambs saw an average of £69.14, up £10.21 on 2019.
