The special anniversary show and sale coincided with the usual annual cattle show and sale which takes place in Bandon each year.

The majority of those on offer were top-quality heavy types over 550kg. There were much more continental-crosses and coloured cattle on offer than on a normal week, but there were buyers for all types.

The main demand for heavy and forward types were feedlot buyers looking to source numbers.

Tom said that prices for heavy types ranged mainly from €400 to €800 over the weight.

Several well-conformed bullocks made upwards of €1,400/head, with one group of three Belgian Blue steers weighing 570kg making €1,400 or €2.46/kg.

Other continental and coloured bullocks over 500kg sold from €1,020 to €1,450.

There was a good share of Angus and Herefords on offer also. These were met with strong buyer demand and prices rose to about €2.00/kg for better-quality types.

Prices ranged from €300 to €800 over once again, with a pair of Angus bullocks weighing 672kg on average making €1,480 each or €2.20/kg.

Herefords around 500kg or a little heavier were selling for around the €1,000/head mark, while Angus steers around the same weight sold mainly from €1.90/kg to €2.00/kg.

Friesian bullocks were quite a steady and strong trade also, with good-quality heavy types making from €1.80/kg to €1.90/kg and lighter stores making from €280 to €540 over the weight.

Continental heifers from 500kg to 550kg sold mainly from €1,000 to €1,220, with lighter types making from €400 to €600 over the weight for average types, with top-quality types making up to €780 over.

Cull cows sold from €50 over for thin Friesians to as much as €900 over for fleshed continentals. The best demand was for all fleshed and short-keep types.

Commission rates for adult cattle are €1.5% to the seller with an entry fee of €2.50 and a minimum charge of €9.50/head and €9 to the buyer.
