Clodagh Bowyer stars in The Ferry

The daughter of showband legend Brendan Bowyer has produced and stars in a new film, The Ferry, which had its premiere at the Galway Film Fleadh two weeks ago in the Town Hall Theatre.

Clodagh Bowyer, who resides in Los Angeles, was in Galway for the special screening and was thrilled to be in the home town of her mother Stella.

Writer and director, Niall McKay, brought the script to Clodagh and she was so moved by the story that she agreed to produce, finance, and star in it. The film also stars Aoife Duffin, Deirdre Donnelly and Rosaleen Linehan.

“I am very proud of Clodagh and the way she produced, directed and starred in the film. All associated with it were thrilled with the response from the audience in Galway. I was delighted that they did the premiere in Galway. We had some amazing nights there with The Royal Showband back in the wonderful 1960s when it was such a thrill for our band to travel up from Waterford for those incredible nights in the West of Ireland,” says Brendan.

Kevin’s night in Irishtown

Mayo country and Irish music artist Kevin Prendergast will host his 16th annual party night in Bourke’s lounge in Irishtown on Friday 2 August.

This is always big night in the village close to the Mayo-Galway border and joining Kevin will be Mick Mulhern, Mary Prendergast, John Kelly and Kay and The Country Stars. Some have been coming every year to Kevin’s big night with many making the journey from various parts of the four provinces. The show in Irishtown gets underway at 9.30pm.

Tommy was friend to many in Manchester

Tommy McKenna, who died in Manchester last week, was among the best-known Irish people in the city. The Carrickmacross man was a legendary figure who was manager of the famous Ard Rí Club for many years while also pioneering R&M Developments.

The big Monaghan man was selfless in his dedication to the Irish community and he was always on hand to warmly welcome people to the Ard Rí Club which attracted thousands to the weekly dances in the past.

He looked forward in a special way to the visits of his great friends, Big Tom and The Mainliners, who were all neighbours back home in Monaghan.

Mayo’s own Kevin Prendergast, who lived in Manchester for many years before returning home to reside in Brickens, says Tommy commanded huge regard among the Irish community around Manchester.

“He was known and respected far and wide and so many people owe that man so much gratitude for his kindness and compassion.

“He had a great fondness for all of us in the music business and he cherished his friends in a special way. Tommy was a great man.”
