Minister for Agriculture Michael Creed has appointed Liam Herlihy as the new chair of the Teagasc Authority for a five-year term.

"Liam brings a wealth of knowledge and extensive experience at a senior Board level to the role," Minister Creed said in a statement this Friday, confirming the appointment revealed earlier by the Irish Farmers Journal.

Herlihy currently holds the position of chair of FBD Holdings plc, having been appointed to the position in May 2017, after becoming a board member in September 2015.

Structural change

He previously held the position of chair of both Glanbia co-op and plc from 2007, and presided over significant structural change and unprecedented growth of the company. He was previously a director of the Irish Dairy Board (now Ornua) and ICOS.

Originally from west Cork, the Herlihys moved to Knockanore in Co Waterford, where a large family dairy farm has been established.

Herlihy replaces Dr Noel Cawley, who served as Teagasc chair for the last decade.

Speaking to the Irish Farmers Journal at the release of his final Teagasc annual report on Thursday, Cawley thanked his colleagues in Teagasc and complimented the organisation’s dedication to operating in an “open and transparent manner”.

Minister Creed paid tribute to Cawley's "outstanding service to the Teagasc Authority".
