There was a noticeable improvement in trade at last Saturday’s Limousin society sale in Roscommon. Of the 48 bulls forward, 35 found new homes, representing a 73% clearance. Average for these bulls levelled at €2,951, back from €3,111 on last year’s buoyant sale.

Leading the way in the sales ring was the reserve junior champion Bracken Major from Padraig Gormley, Carrigallen, Co Leitrim. Born February 2017, the stylish young bull is a son of the well-known Ampertaine Gigolo, while the dam is Esker-Hill Jacintha ET. Securing the sale topper at €5,000 was Sligo-based Joe Kelly.

William Smith from Oldcastle led proceedings in the show ring, claiming both the senior and junior championships.

His junior champion Milbrook Miner proved more in demand when he sold for €4,100.

Five-star ratings

This bull is sired by homebred Milbrook Itchyballs, a son of Ampertaine Commander, which goes back to Balmoral champion Milbrook Celine. With five-star ratings down the line, this one was secured by Northern Ireland-based Colin Irwin.

Close on his heels securing a bid of €4,000 was the senior champion Milbrook L222, again sired by Milbrook Itchyballs, this time going back on a Fieldson Alfie-bred dam. Five stars on both the terminal and replacement indices, L222 was secured by Kieran Coone, Loughrea, Co Galway.

Matching him at the money was the second-prizewinner Lennon Luigi from Patrick Sweeny, Letterkenny, Co Donegal. This August 2016-born bull was sired by Kaprico Eravelle, with Wilodge Cerberus and Lino also in his lineage. Placing the last bid was John Gavin, Mullingar, Co Westmeath.

Michael and Noel Ruthledge realised €3,700 for their 20-month-old Rutland Lucas. Sired by Elderberry Galahad, Lucas’s back-breeding also featured Queenshead Altea and Ampertaine Commander. This fourth-prizewinner heads west with John Moore, Ballinasloe, Co Galway.

Reserve senior champion

The reserve senior championship was awarded to Richard O’Beirne for his November 2016-born Millburn Lismore.

Sired by Ampertaine Foreman, Lismore is out of Ionesco-bred daughter Thomastown Ena. Martin O’Malley, Co Mayo, was successful bidder on the day with a €3,700 call.

Laurence and John Lynch secured a bid of €3,600 for Portauns Limited Edition. This Ronick Hawk son was born in October 2016 and carried five stars down the line. Limited Edition was acquired by Larry Prendiville, Killucan, Co Westmeath.

The third-prizewinning Coolrain Lenard was next in line when he secured a bid of €3,500.

Bred and exhibited by Gearoid and Padraic Kennedy, Portlaoise, Lenard is a son of herd stock bull Drummin Goliath.

Featuring Wilodge Vantastic and Ronick Hawk in the back-breeding, the August 2016-born bull was knocked down to a Mayo-based customer.
