After applying to the Department of Agriculture for a new herd number, a farmer in the northeast was surprised to receive a call from an inspector mandated to examine their crush.

While the herd does number several thousand head and handling can be a challenge, there were no plans for heavy-duty stainless steel here – this is a snail farm. The misunderstanding was easily cleared up during a pleasant inspection by the official, who was fascinated by the new venture. After further clarifying with his head office that no, the snails were not under the care of a nominated vet, the farm duly received its herd number.
