Weather forecast

Following a mostly dry start today, Met Éireann has issued a yellow weather warning for this afternoon and evening, when a band of rain will move across the country from the south west. Rainfall is forecast to be between 15 and 25mm and may cause further difficulties in flooded areas.

Strong gusts of wind will accompany the rain.

After patches of frost this morning, afternoon temperatures will range from 5 or 6 °C in northern areas to 9 or 10°C near the south coast.

In the news today

  • The executive council of the IFA has unanimously agreed to proposed rule changes which would ensure a new president is elected by the end of April.
  • Also in IFA news, Nigel Renaghan, IFA poultry chair, has told the Irish Farmers Journal that he is pulling out of the presidential race to focus on becoming deputy.
  • At its emergency meeting to discuss flooding on Tuesday, the government decided to establish a hardship recognition scheme for farmers and a fodder replacement scheme.
  • Also in flooding news, the National Co-ordination Group for Response to Flooding has issued advice for people with septic tanks on their land during the flooding crisis. Meanwhile, the ESB has offered electrical safety advice.
  • In dairy news, the first Global Dairy Trade auction of 2016 saw a drop of 1.6% in dairy commodity prices. The previous GDT index on 15 December 2015 had witnessed a lift of 1.9%.
