There was a good mix of interest and buyers from Tipperary, Limerick, Kerry and Clare for the annual Newport Christmas suckler sale.

Ten-year-old suckler cows scanned in calf for March made between €850 and €950 each, while younger cows (second and third calvers) made between €950 and €1,100 each. A small selection of cows with a young calf at foot sold for between €1,000 and €1,150 each.

In-calf suckler heifers attracted plenty of interest from right around the ring. One bunch of three-year-old heifers made between €1,400 and €1,600. Two batches of very well presented two-year-old heifers made between €1,100 and €1,250 each.

Suckler cows

A selection of 10-year-old cows all scanned in calf sold early in the sale. A March calving red Hereford (DOB July 2007) made €880. A Limousin in calf to five-star Charolais (born in March 2008) made €1,000.

A mid-March calving Shorthorn cross (born in September 2006) made €890. A late March-calving black whitehead (born in July 2007) made €900. A red and white Simmental-type cow in calf for March made €840 in the ring but was left unsold. A 2006-born big black cow in calf to the Charolais for January made €950.

A small-for-age brown Simmental-type young cow (born in September 2014) has her second calf due in mid-February to the Limousin made €800 but was left unsold. A nice 2008-born red Limousin due end of February or early March sold for €1,050. A second calver (born in 2014) in calf to pedigree Limousin sold for €1,080.

Lot 223 was a big black cow scanned seven months in calf to Limousin bull (Rocky) that made €1,130. A second calver Limousin cow (born in January 2014) that was scanned six and half months in calf sold for €1,080.

Lot 235 was scanned six months in calf to Rocky (born in December 2013) and made €950. Lot 226 was a Belgian Blue second calver (born in April 2013) in calf seven months to Rocky that sold for €1,090. Lot 227 was in calf seven months (born in July 2009) and made €1,090.

Cows with calves at foot

A selection of sucklers from near Castleisland with calves at foot made average money. A Charolais heifer with white calf at foot made €1,070. Lot 222 (born in February 2011), due to calve down in two weeks to a Charolais bull, made €1,050. Lot 221 was a Limousin (born in September 2011) with a Charolais calf (December 2016) that made €1,050. Lot 220 (born in February 2013) was an Aberdeen Angus red cow with Charolais heifer calf that sold for €1,060.

One of the best prices of the day was for lot 249, which was a pedigree-registered big red Limousin cow (born in January 2010) with a pedigree-registered bull calf at foot sired by Celtic Issac. The pair made €1,920. An Aberdeen Angus cow (born in May 2010) that had been inseminated but not guaranteed in calf with a Belgian Blue calf by VSM made €1,320.

In-calf heifers

The Newport suckler sale started off sizzling hot with a bunch of Limousin in-calf heifers all due in January to a purebred Aberdeen Angus. Declan O’Connell from Limerick sold a selection of three-year-old heifers for between €1,400 and €1,600.

There were two large batches of in-calf heifers from two local herds for sale. There was a very nice batch of 14 red Limousin heifers which were all homebred and scanned in calf to a five-star Limousin from the Morrissey herd near Newport. All were well grown (over 500kg), fleshed and well presented. Prices ranged from €1,050 to €1,260.

The first heifer to sell was born in February 2015 and sold for €1,200. A real red heifer sold for €1,100. Lot 227 (born in January 2015) made €1,070 and lot 228 (born in January 2015) was a nice red Limousin that went for €1,180.

Lot 229 (born in February 2015) was a nice, well-fleshed red Limousin that made €1,130 and lot 230 (born in January 2015) made €1,260. Lot 232 (born in April 2015) made €1,270 and lot 233 (born in March 2015) made €1,260.
