Theatre

Uprooted – 11-13 July: Uprooted is developed and performed by a culturally diverse group of community performers living in Sligo and based on their personal experiences. The piece explores the notion of acceptability in a darkly comic way and how newcomers to a place can experience varying degrees of acceptance depending on where they have come from and how they assimilate to a new culture by abandoning their own. Uprooted explores prejudices and asks what we are afraid of. Performing at the Hawk’s Well Theatre, admission is €12 with tickets available at www.hawkswell.com.

Film

Never Look Away – 5 July: A sweeping romantic historical drama, Never Look Away follows 30 years in the life of a great artist, loosely based on Gerhard Richter, one of the 20th century’s most admired visual artists, played by Tom Schilling. The film goes from a child witnessing Nazi Germany, to post-war east Berlin, where he falls in love with a young woman whose father is an ex-Nazi murderer in hiding, to escaping to the west at the time of the Berlin Wall, and ultimately being part of the exciting new movement in contemporary art. Never Look Away is set for release in Irish cinemas from 5 July.

Comedy

Brendan Grace Show – 6 July: Brendan’s latest show features some brand new material and some old favourites from his vast repertoire over the last 40 years. His sense of timing and ability to read an audience is without equal. His brilliant character actor, Bottler is legendary on the comedy scene and is now featured at every performance. Apart from his obvious star quality in all aspects of his performance, Brendan’s drawing power is enormous and the house full sign is the norm rather than the exception at his shows. Taking to the stage at the Abbey Hotel in Ballyvourney, Co Cork, the Brendan Grace Show is sure to impress. Tickets are €33 and are available at www.ticketmaster.ie.
