Carlow town has got its first dedicated farm machinery dealership in over 20 years as Lyons and Burton have just officially opened their doors for business. This new venture for the family-run business builds on over 40 years of serving the needs of the local agricultural community. This too is a testament to the strong relationship the team have with New Holland, flying the blue and yellow flag high at the existing branch in Kilcock, Co Kildare. Lyons and Burton’s origins have been pure New Holland since the business began in 1977.

Why Carlow?

The main reason Lyons and Burton have set up in Carlow town is the need for a New Holland dealer to service the needs of customers given that the territory is a stronghold for the New Holland equipment range. Business director at Lyons and Burton Donald Lyons says: “This is a testament to the past success of JR Perry and Enniscorthy Motor Company, with this particular location for our new depot proving to be ideally located between Athy and Enniscorthy”

Also, Carlow’s excellent road network gives easy access to the surrounding areas of Laois, south Kildare, north Kilkenny, north Wexford and west Wicklow.

Doors of the Carlow branch opened in early May, and since then the team have ironed out any minor teething issues, built up parts inventory and built on sales reputations while focusing on providing a full backup service over the busy summer period. With everything in place and staff settled in, the team hit the ground running with the official opening of the branch held on 6 September.

Donald Lyons said: “Lyons and Burton are confident in New Holland products and have invested significantly in developing our new Carlow depot. We have invested a substantial amount of time, resources and research into our new parts department especially in order to service the large array of tractors, combines, balers and telehandlers that are in the area.

“Although there are now two premises, stock and expertise will be shared from both locations. The Carlow depot will supply a wide range of products including tractors, balers, telescopic handlers, and implements. We will add to our range of implements and equipment as they become available.”

The new depot has a modern service department with a fully equipped workshop kitted out with the latest diagnostic equipment and, more importantly, two fully trained service technicians – John Redmond and Eamon Buckley – ably supported by our Kilcock technicians. Looking after the parts department are Keith Hogan and Donald Lyons, fully supported by the staff in Kilcock. On the off chance parts are not in stock in either depot, they are never more than 24 hours away thanks to New Holland’s overnight parts delivery service.

The Lyons and Burton sales team in Kilcock are certain they will bring the same quality of service to Carlow. Damien Finn has joined the family-run business as sales manager for the Carlow branch having previously worked with Enniscorthy Motor Company from where he takes with him a wealth of knowledge within the New Holland brand. Damien brings to the table an existing relationship with many current New Holland customers within the territory which creates a seamless transition. Damien says a huge part of this venture is to “look after previous customers of the motor company and JR Perry as well as establishing New Holland as the number one brand within our territory”.

History

The new venture in Carlow is building on the history of Lyons and Burton in Kilcock. Lyons and Burton opened its doors for business in Kilcock in 1977 where it remains today. It was founded by three brothers, Alan, Percy, and Ernest Lyons along with Derek Burton. Lyons and Burton were appointed as New Holland dealer to sell the complete range of combine harvesters, forage harvesters, square balers, round balers, mowers and rakes. In its first year of infancy the dealership sold 23 combines, four self-propelled forage harvesters and 66 square balers. In 1979, the family-run business was appointed as the franchise of Fiat tractors, selling in excess of 160 tractors in the next nine years. Shortly after Fiatagri tractors bought New Holland, the business changed its colours, but in 2013 returned to New Holland to resume a successful partnership.
